Cakes

I like to build interesting cakes...it's fun and I get to lick icing off my fingers. Although my cakes would never ever win an award or be fetured in a magizine, my kids (and niece!) think they are awesome. Here's some of hte cakes I've made.

Shepherd Down!

I spent over a week making this fantastic gingerbread nativity set. I can't bare to pack it up so it lives in my living room...today my favorite Shepherd...the one covered in Reece's Pieces took the 4 foot dive (for a 6 inch cookie that's like 40 feet) to the cold hardwood below. Ahh...poor Reece's shepherd...you will be missed...

Totally jealous

So there's these blogger mommies out there with book deals and having lunch and making money blogging.

Ever since her life changing eBay listing Dawn Meehan's blog Because I said So has been in my favorites, I read it at least once a week-sometimes daily. She is doing exactly what i want to do...seriously read my archives, I've blogged about it...ugh.

(Seriously, good for you Dawn!)

From her blog I found Manic Mommy...yep, she does the same thing. Apparently I didn't get the memo there was an audience out there for moms who just want to talk about their day. No I know but I'll look like a copy cat (I mean who's going to read my archives? And who's to say I'm not some computer genius that can alter the date to look like I posted like a year ago so I don't look like a poser. Well, I am a poser, you are too, there is nothing new under the sun.

Hmmm, I do have a twist, I'm a homeschooler...maybe I could post about homeschool-y things and become the Dawn Meehan of the homeschooling (sorry home educating for those who hate object to the word school) community. Oh I'm going to the Cincinnati homeschool convention again this year...I could leave business cards with my blog addy laying around...hmmm...not a bad idea....[raising one eyebrow and wringing hands]

If I do that, I'll have to become much better at remembering to spell check...

Eliya's night at the ER

Eliya's been sick. I didn't think she was really sick since she is a drama queen when it comes to pain...or even just being uncomfortable. Monday she said her ears hurt..but later that day she said they were better. On Wednesday night she said her side and tummy hurt. Thursday when Wes came home, Eliya was moaning as she held her side...put in a movie and her side felt better, ask her to clean something her side hurt...I was skeptical to say the least. Friday I took her to the Dr. where Eliya had an all out tantrum on the table when it was suggested she pee in a cup, then again when asked to lay down so he could listen to her tummy and feel around. He gave us an antibiotic without a urine test and we were happy.

Saturday, Eliya had a fever all day, it was not being helped by Tylenol and Motrin, even the bath only brought it down a bit. At 11:00 she woke up nauseous and threw up. I got online and found that she had every symptom for appendicitis. I woke Wes up, called his mom and then I called her Dr-he said she needed to be seen.

I woke Eliya up and told her we needed to go to the hospital, she started crying and said she was scared. It was all I could do to not cry and say I was scared too. We got the boys up and dropped them off at Cindy's house and made it to the ER by 12:30.

Where we waited.

We didn't get into a room until 2:30.

ugh...

A doctor came in pretty quickly and looked Eliya up and down and told us she had an ear infection and that could cause swelling of the lymph nodes in her belly and cause the pain, it could be the bladder infection she was diagnosed with yesterday or it could be appendicitis.

We would know after blood tests, a urine test and a CT scan.

double ugh...

Her fantastic nurse came in and started prepping her for her IV, so they could take her blood, give her medicine for the nausea and fluids, also so it would be ready if she did in fact have appendicitis and needed surgery. She was great, she talked to Eliya, brought her two little stuffed animals (which we named Isaac and Victor-haha). She had a hard time finding a vein. Eliya's 7 and a bit dehydrated. She found one and poked her-Eliya screamed but was still. Then she said she didn't get it. She had another nurse come in and see if she could feel it...she couldn't. They had to take that out and try on Eliya's other arm. It took a while, her vein was very deep. one nurse held her arm while the other worked on the needle. Eliya screamed again...a lot. She kept telling the nurses "I've never had this before." Poor thing.

When that was over they gave me a Tylenol suppository to give her-she screamed again.

She got all settled down and the nurse said we could wait a bit on the urine sample so we don't traumatise her further. Great, we were able to breath and watch the fourth or was it fifth Fresh Prince of Bell Air. Another nurse came in with 3 small cups of liquid that Eliya had to drink. It was about 4 ounces every 15 minutes, then she could go down for her CT scan.

She sipped it, it was awful. After the first 15 minutes she still wasn't done with her first one...we asked her if she wanted us to pour it into her next one, she said yes. At the end of the next 15 minutes she still had almost all of it to go. Wes and I started with encouraging and ended up a bit closer to forcing her to take sips...then she threw it all up.

We got the nurses in there and they helped and called the doctor...turns out she could have that intravenously...that bothered me, why would they even attempt to force a child who came in with nausea to drink something nasty if there was an alternative...whatever...

Now we're calmed down again and I remind Eliya that they still need a urine sample...she's very weirded out about peeing in a cup. I told her I'd help her and there was nothing to worry about...my hands wash. She decided she could and they ended up putting an insert in the toilet for her to pee into so it wasn't weird at all.

Then someone came in to wheel her down to CT. He told us we didn't need to go but we were like...uhhh...we're going. I was able to stay in there, which was great. That went off beautifully. At the end Eliya told the technician "I've never done that before." The tech said it would be about 45 minutes until we get the results.

Back in the room some really lame kids shows were coming on PBS...it was 4:30 or 5:00 at this point. I was feeling sick and sent Wes to the store to get me pop tarts. He got back and we were still watching the awful shows.

45 minutes came and went...an hour...we read some books...an hour and a half...the nurse brought us an a bag of activity sheets, crayons and a book to take home (She also told Eliya she's been the best kid all week-Eliya loved that) at two hours the doctor came in.

Eliya did not have appendicitis! Woohoo! She had 2 ear infections and a kidney infection. They gave her IV antibiotics and sent us home with a presciption and orders to see our Dr for a follow up the next day.

We went home and slept. It was 8:00.
